Treatment of stiff fingers

There are many preventable causes of stiff fingers, such as casts or splints that are too distal, or failure to move the fingers after hand, wrist, elbow and even shoulder surgery.

At times, however--and for unclear reasons--some patients develop stiffness that either interferes with straightening the fingers out, or interferes with making a full fist.

Treatment revolves around therapy for weeks and even months, in most cases, but occasionally residual stiffness results in functional problems that warrant corrective surgery.

Such surgery usually helps, but a lengthy period of therapy will be required postoperatively. In the final analysis, I will discuss the pros and cons of surgery with you so that you can make an informed choice.
